Hey - It’s Michael.

Had a blast dancing at Retro Festival in Warsaw last weekend. Enjoy the newsletter!

The Situation

You wake up and reach for your phone. 15 new messages, 22 new emails, 37 notifications from different apps. You open the browser & check the news - this war, that crisis. You go outside, this billboard, that advertisement. You talk to someone, this problem, that story. They ask you to do X for them and complain about Y.

Constant. Mental. Overload.

The System

For healthy high performance you need to be able to make good decisions. For good decisions you need a clear mind. For a clear mind you need mental boundaries to protect yourself from everything that is going on outside of you, so you can think for yourself.

You wouldn’t let any random stranger into your house, so why would you let any random information (=stranger) into your brain (=house)?

The solution is to be aware of how you set up your life in order to only let in information you choose to let in.

Principle:

Protect your peace of mind with adequate mental boundaries

In Practice

Get grounded & do this in a calm & clear state:

Think about situations where you feel overwhelmed and stressed. This might be after reading news, coming out of stressful discussions with Person A, scrolling this app or using that app.

Now design rules for yourself of what you will refuse to do in the future.

Stop Rule

Stop letting anything or anyone occupy space in your mind without your permission.

The most effective rules are the ones you support with environmental design: If you want to stop scrolling this app, delete it. If you want to stop watching TV, get rid of the TV. If you want to stop hearing the judgment & gossip of person A, walk away from them.
